GIN- Shangilia service trips & Hunger Banquet

The service group, of which I am head, is organising Wednesday trips to Shangilia, starting next wednesday (28th).
Shangilia is a children's centre in one of Nairobi's slums, and has been helping children deal with their experiences using performing arts for around 16 years now.
This is the first year that GIN is visiting the centre, but Mrs Lavender and Mme Houriez visited Shangilia once or twice to plan these weekly trips.

Next time that we have a Wednesday assembly, our Service group is going to present a small video or a slideshow to get more students to come.

The Hunger Banquet that GIN is organising will take place on Saturday October 8th.

The banquet's goal is to raise both awareness and money for the famine in the Horn of Africa.
All the money that we get from the tickets and the donation boxes are going to go to the Kenyan Red Cross and SAACID.
We're also hoping that a representative from the Red Cross will come as a guest speaker.

GIN is organising a silent auction that will take place during the banquet. Prizes will include food and gift baskets!

The banquet will be in the MPR at ISK, and tickets cost 1500ksh
for any student (ISK and other schools alike), and 2500ksh for any adults.

NHS & Making choices

YES!
Today, I received a letter saying that I have been accepted, and am now a member of NHS!!
Of course, I know that I will have to pay more attention to my time management and organisation, as I already do quite a few activities.

Now it comes to making decisions. I am now participating in three various Creativity activities: Guitar lessons, Artsco. and the Prom committee. I really should continue with prom, as I am a leader, and it is a lot of fun, really exciting and I will never be able to do this again. I'm also continuing with my guitar lessons, because it is about time that I began learning a new instrument.
I was in Artsco. last year, and it was great, because I was in tenth grade, and my workload wasn't all that big. This year, as a junior, I have lots of work, and I just cannot come to the wednesday meetings, due to maths tutoring and GIN Shangalia trips.
I also feel that I cannot do justice to all of my activities individually due to their number. Therefore, I am going to stop with Artsco.

PTO Welcome Back Picnic

On saturday 10th, ISK held the PTO picnic.
I was part of three different activities: the 11th grade drinks stall, the 11th grade fundraiser game (shave the balloon/pillow fight), and Artsco.'s face-painting.
We had a few problems with the shave the balloon game, including some cut thumbs, and un-poppable balloons. In the end, however, we managed to make the game work, and it was fun for everyone who played.
The drinks stand was very busy, and so our shift, like all the others, was running around trying to get everyone's orders.
At the Artsco. stand, the people face-painting didn't want to leave, so I only managed to paint one or two faces.

It was all lots of fun, and a great learning experience.
I can only hope that this event will teach me how to be a good face painter and event facilitator.

Action activities

This week, (monday 5th to friday 9th of september), I cannot do any sports due to the fact that I bruised my ribs this weekend.

Therefore, I am not going to Track & Field or Leisure Club this week, though I will, of course, start up again on monday.
:)

Leadership

I love being the leader/head of a group, especially if it is relatively small.

However, I haven't had many opportunities to practise my leadership skills. That has changed slightly (yay!) and I am now co-head of Decor in the 11th grade prom committee, as well as being head of the Service group in GIN.

The decor committee organises the venue and decorations for the prom, which impacts every other group's (e.g. Public Relations, Food, Fundraising etc.) decision.

The service group in GIN is organising the Shangalia wednesday service trips, as well as helping with the Hunger Banquet.
